An ancient silver locket. A thimble-sized prayer wheel. A carved emerald bead in the shape of a songbird. Like a magpie drawn to alluring objects, Maithili is always on the look out for hidden treasures, scouring far-flung flea markets, antique stores and even her mother’s closet for forgotten gems.
Armed with degrees from Tufts University and Sotheby’s Institute of Art, Maithili channeled her interests in history, philosophy and aesthetics through interior design and art, before ultimately turning to her most enduring passion.
M. Khatau is a culmination of years of study, observation and relentless experimentation. After creating one-off pieces for friends and family, Maithili finally brings her jewellery to a wider audience.
With a desire to imbibe material with meaning and memory, for Maithili, jewelry has always been more than mere ornamentation. It is an embodiment of what she considers extremely precious - a thought, an idea or emotion that must carry through the generations and take with it the stories, memories and meanings that turn each piece of jewellery into an heirloom.
